Volunteering Opportunities

The Churches’ Bookshop could not exist without its volunteers. This is why we are always looking to welcome new people to our team, especially long-term volunteers. Open six hours a day, five days a week, customers have described the bookshop as a “hidden pearl” in the heart of Douglas. Most days it is quiet, with sudden bursts of activity around seasonal holidays.
If you are someone who enjoys peace and quiet, is happy to help others, and would like to join a small, dedicated team, we would love to hear from you.
Responsibilities in the bookshop include:

  • Opening the bookshop at the start of the day and closing the bookshop at the end of the day;
  • Taking payments through the till (cash and card);
  • Taking customer orders;
  • Answering the bookshop phone during opening hours;
  • Familiarising yourself with stock;
  • And advising customers on differences between Bible translations.

You will receive comprehensive training with the manager or one of the volunteers. If you discover that you feel confident with the payment system and have a car, you could also take book stalls out to events across the island.

As a volunteer, you are not contracted to spend a certain amount of hours in the bookshop every week. Many of our current volunteers occasionally step back to care for grandchildren or other family members. In these instances, the rest of the team do what they can to cover.

HOLIDAYS & MEETINGS
The bookshop is always closed for approximately two weeks during Christmas, closing on or around the 24th of December. We usually reopen the second week of January.
The bookshop is also closed during Race Week of TT.
The bookshop team meets 2-3 times a year to socialise, discuss stock and promotions, highlight upcoming events, and otherwise lay the course for the bookshop.
